Musical Work Questions
- What is a Copyright Registration Number? The Copyright Registration Number is a unique 12 character alphanumeric code generated by the US Copyright Office for each copyrighted musical work registered with the US Copyright Office. When entering online, omit spaces and hyphens when typing your Copyright Registration Number and add leading zeros to the numeric portion of the registration number if needed. For example:
- VAu-999-999 = vau000999999

- Can I search for Spotify Tracks by using my Copyright Registration Number (CRN)? There is no website or database with the ability to search for Spotify Tracks embodying a musical work by entering a Copyright Registration Number. It is the responsibility of the claimant to identify which tracks, if any, embody your musical composition and were made available for interactive streaming and/or limited downloading without a license between December 28, 2012 and June 29,2017. It is very important to note that you must provide the copyright registration number for every musical work you intend to claim as well as the Spotify Track ID for each Spotify track embodying the corresponding musical work. The terms of the court-approved Settlement Agreement dictate the claiming process and procedures. Per the terms of the Settlement Agreement, to be eligible for royalties through the Future Royalty Payments Program, Settlement Class Members who did not submit a timely and valid settlement Claim Form must fully complete and timely submit a Valid Royalty Claim Form to the Settlement Administrator. To complete the Royalty Claim Form, Settlement Class Members must provide some information about themselves, such as their names and contact information, and about relevant musical compositions (i.e., those that were made available by Spotify for interactive streaming and/or limited downloads between December 28, 2012 and June 29, 2017, for which you contend that Spotify did not have a license). The required information includes the copyright registration number for each musical composition and the track identifier for each recording of that composition streamed by Spotify. Spotify has assembled a track database to facilitate the submission of Royalty Claim Forms by Settlement Class Members.Back To Top

- I received a postcard in 2017 with a Claimant ID and Control Number. Do I need any of these to file a claim? The Claimant ID and Control Numbers printed on the postcard notice mailed in 2017 have no bearing on your claim, as they were only used to track mailing information. Again, the Claimant ID and Control Numbers are completely unrelated to your claim.Postcards were mailed to the addresses of all registered claimants of copyrights in musical compositions whose addresses appear in electronic records maintained in a digitally searchable format by the U.S. Copyright Office starting in 2008. If you received multiple postcards you may have multiple records with the U.S. Copyright Office. Please note that receipt of a postcard simply indicates you registered a copyright in a musical work and does not prove membership in the Settlement Class. In order to be included in the Settlement Class, you must satisfy three requirements:
- First, you must be the owner of the copyright in a musical composition.
- Second, you or someone else must have applied for or received a certificate of registration from the United States Copyright Office on or before June 29, 2017.
- Third, Spotify must have made that musical composition available for interactive streaming and/or limited downloading without a license between December 28, 2012 and June 29, 2017.
Not all owners of a copyright in a musical composition will be a part of the Settlement Class. It is the responsibility of the claimant to identify which tracks, if any, embody your musical composition and were made available for interactive streaming and/or limited downloading without a license between December 28, 2012 and June 29, 2017.Please note that if you previously submitted a timely Valid Claim Form for payment from the Settlement Fund, you will automatically be enrolled in the Future Royalty Payments Program with respect to any tracks you validly claimed that embody your Claimed Musical Works.
